Hi! Today I’m taking a break from 2020 wrap up posts to participate in a linkup created by Maya Joelle called Meet My MC! (Main character) Which is just how it sounds, we answer fun questions on the main character of our WIPs! I’ll be doing this for both of my main WIP protagonists, AK from my fantasy novel Project Ocean Eyes, and V from my contemporary/historical fiction, Project Gander. 🙂
Introduce your MC. What’s their name? Age? Appearance? (Sharing collages/inspiration photos encouraged!)
AK from Project Ocean Eyes (btw that’s just her initials and a code name for the title, not their actual names. I use them because I don’t want to give too much away on the internet, same with V and Project Gander) is 18, and she has long dark hair and blue eyes. 🙂
V from Project Gander is 20 and she has long blonde hair and gray eyes. 🙂
Explain how your MC fits into the plot of your book (as best you can without spoiling it all…).
AK is the first mate of her brother’s ship that he’s the captain of. He took her in 10 years ago and adopted her as his sister when they found her floating unconscious in the ocean and woke two days later with no memory of her life before.
V was in Europe for a 6-month internship when a personal crisis sent her home early. On the flight home, her plane is stranded in Newfoundland due to the events of 9/11.
What’s the first thing your MC says in the story? The last? A random quote from the middle that you like?
Oooh, this is a fun question! For AK, the very first thing she says is: “Yes.”
Which is…kinda lame out of context. XD
The very last thing she says is: “All of this for little old me?”
Another really weird line totally out of context. XD
And a random line in the middle I think is funny is: “It was an accident! We’re pirates, these things happen!” In response to accidentally burning down a tavern. XD
And for V in Project Gander, the first thing she says is: “No!”
*facepalm* Is it bad that the very first thing that my characters says out loud in both my WIPs are yes and no? XD
Anyway, the last thing she says so far (I’m still only about halfway through the draft) is: “Oh no, it’s okay. I can go to bed too. I don’t know what else I’d do down here anyway.” Which is so random. XD
And I couldn’t decide for one in the middle.
Which other character would die for your MC?
For AK, her brother. For V, uhhh Idk, her mom I guess?
Would your MC die for them?
AK, yes, probably. V, Idk she probably couldn’t handle even thinking about something like that right now.
Have any major details about your MC changed since you first created them?
Major details? I don’t think so. I think for AK, once I try to rewrite it I know a lot will have to change about the plot, but Idk about her character. I think what will need to change is just figuring out a better way to actually get her personality across the way I want it to.
For V, she’s still a fairly new character to me, so not really. I think in the second part of the draft I’ll try to build onto her more rather than change anything.
What characters (from books/movies not by you) remind you of your MC? Why?
Oh for AK, I have a whole list. 😛 But I’ve said before that the original seed of an idea for her came years ago when I wondered what it’d be like if Jack Sparrow had a teenage daughter. XD And also, another character that reminds me of her is Celaena Sardothien from Throne of Glass. Just the whole fierceness and sassiness thing but she also has compassion. She’s a very layered character that’s pretty different from me, so I hope the more I read that series it could help me understand how to write someone like AK well.
And V, Idk. She’s much more closely based on me, but when I first thought of her I kinda was inspired by Shane from Again, But Better by Christine Riccio? Only a little bit. Mostly with her insecurity and feeling like you have to be a certain way when you turn 20 and have to have your life figured out.
Share your MC’s favorites! (color, food, type of clothing, place, type of music, season, smell, etc.)
AK: Um, I feel bad that I don’t know most of this yet. XD Normally I would have all these kinds of things figured out before I started writing, but I feel like I haven’t done that much lately. O.o …Well, I know she has a sweet tooth and loves desserts like pastries, but I haven’t decided what kind specifically yet. She probably like shades of blue the most because it reminds her of the ocean, and maybe the smell of salt in the air and singing sea shanties? Idk, anything having to do with the ocean, basically.
V, likes dressing simply; she usually would wear something like jeans, a tee shirt, turtlenecks or a denim jacket, and minimal jewelry. She loves Disney movies and songs, classical music from ballets because she used to take ballet when she was little, collecting snowglobes, books, The Chronicles of Narnia, (she always carries a copy of Prince Caspian with her) and anything that reminds her of her childhood.
If your MC wasn’t involved in your story, what would they be doing? (Basically: what’s their dream life? Where do they want to live, what do they want to do?)
Uhhhh AK would probably be doing the same thing she was before the story started, sailing around with her brother and his crew, enjoying freedom and a pirate’s life. Or if the reason she’s on the ship in the first place never happened, she’d be living in her old life and probably miserable. But I can’t tell you why or what her life was cuz it’s a spoiler. XD
And Idk about V. Probably kind of the same thing as AK. She’d probably still be in Europe suffering through her internship because she keep telling herself it’s where she’s supposed to be, when maybe it really isn’t.
Share a fun extra (another collage, a playlist, a scene from the story, a drawing, etc.).
Well I always end a writing related post with a playlist song, so this time for this question I’ll give you two songs! One that reminds me of AK, and one that reminds me of V. 🙂
