Top Ten Tuesday-10 Retelling Recommendations!

Hey guys! Sorry I ended up skipping Saturday. My mental energy hasn’t been the best and the post I was planning to do, a recently read update, I thought would just be simpler if I included it in my monthly wrap up instead.

But today I have for you another Top Ten Tuesday! (Hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl) This week’s topic was a genre freebie, so I decided to recommend ten of my favorite retellings! Do retellings count as a genre? Oh well, in recent years I’ve come to really love them, and every time I see a new one pop up I’m ooooooh, yes! Gimme! 😛 I keep a notebook full of lists of books to recommend for certain genres in future blog posts, but I haven’t written any yet because I wanted to feel like I’ve read enough books to recommend, but with this week’s topic I realized I finally had a long enough list with retellings so I had an excuse to talk about them! 😀

1. Shadow Queen-Snow White

I loved this one! The magic system was so cool and unique, and it has dragons and cool worldbuilding, a great slow burn (if I remember correctly) romance, and the villain kinda reminded me of Regina from OUAT? XD This author has three more books in this series that are retellings of Rumplestiltskin, Prince and the Pauper (I think?) and Cinderella, and I really want to get to them some day!

2. The Boy Who Steals Houses-Goldilocks

This is a very loose gender-bent contemporary retelling of Goldilocks, and one of my favorite books ever! It has such lovable characters, great writing that’ll make you laugh and cry, and mental health/autism rep!

3. To Kill A Kingdom-The Little Mermaid

I really didn’t know if I would like it when I first started it, but it was so good! I’ve said this a lot, but I was really impressed with the worldbuilding and I ended up loving the romance when I was a little wary of the characters at first. XD But it was just so FUN to read! It’s got sailors, sirens, mermaids, contrasting settings, and you can recognize some elements from the Disney version and see how the author put a dark twist on them. But not too dark for me, which I like. XD

4. A Whole New World-Disney’s Aladdin

I got this as a birthday present when I was 18 and hadn’t heard anything about it, but I finally read it a couple of years ago and loved it! This whole series takes Disney movies and twists a key point in them, and in this one the question is what would happen if Jafar got to the lamp first? I may not remember all the details, but I really love the creative take the author did on it and that Jasmine had much bigger and stronger role to play! Other than this I’ve only read the Sleeping Beauty one, which I didn’t like as much of this, but I would love to finish the series soon!

5. Geekerella-Cinderella

This is such a cute and great contemporary Cinderella retelling! It really reminds me of the Hilary Duff movie, but even more modernized for the 2010’s. XD

6. Dorothy Must Die-The Wizard of Oz

Okay, it’s been a loooong time since I’ve read this, but I’ve kept up with the series since then and this first one is still my favorite! It kinda reminds me of the movie Oz the Great and Powerful with the worldbuilding visuals, but the plot and quirky characters were so intriguing, and the whole “why the heck is Dorothy evil now” question makes you get invested really quickly. XD

7. Heartless-Alice in Wonderland

Okay I guess this isn’t a retelling more than it is a prequel, but I’m still counting it. This is another one that reminded me of my favorite show, OUAT, so that definitely made me love it. XD There’s baking, wonderland, really intriguing characters, and sort of like Dorothy Must Die, it drags you along wondering where everything went wrong for Cath to become the villain!

8. My Plain Jane-Jane Eyre

This is a retelling of Jane Eyre, which, I read a few years ago and less than enjoyed. In this version they make it more lighthearted and funny, add some paranormal/fantasy, and “fix” the “questionable” romance by today’s standards, without totally discrediting the original classic since they made the author a character! I don’t want to explain too much and spoil it, but I definitely prefer this to the original version. XD

9. Peter and the Starcatchers-Peter Pan

Okay it’s been yeeeeeeaaaaarrrrrsssss since I read this, like elementary school probably? I know I didn’t finish the series until I was in high school though. XD But still I know this series was really good! I know Wendy’s family have something to do with creating pixie dust? So they know about Neverland already and everything? It was really cool. I definitely need to get my hands on this series and reread them, cuz I’m sure I would love it still as an adult.

10. Scarlet-Robin Hood

I read this a couple of years ago too, and basically it’s like Will Scarlet is secretly a girl, and there’s a romance between her and Robin and some twists and turns which were cool. I don’t know that much about Robin Hood except the basics, but I still really enjoyed it! It’s another series I want to finish too. 🙂
